Do you have a (N) scale, or (HO) scale or (O) scale Atlas turntable?


How does an Atlas turntable actually function?
Under the Atlas turntable rotating disk, there is a Geneva movement cam drive system.


* An example of a (6) position Geneva movement.
* The Atlas 12.V-DC motor is always turning.
* At the delayed required index location the 12.V-DC motor is turned "Off".


How the Atlas turntable indexes is an excellent simple procedure. Between the turntable rotating disk and the support base, there are open gaps. These open gaps will allow small foreign debris to fall into the Geneva movement causing indexing problems.  (track ballast). Periodically remove the turntable rotating disk and check for any foreign debris.

The Atlas turntable is powered by an Atlas 12.V-DC electric motor. The older electric motors used multiple gears and the newer electric motors now use a belt drive for a quieter operation.

Using (N) scale, (HO) scale and (O) scale [Geneva Movement] Atlas turntables. The (2) plastic surfaces rubbing against each other will cause a lot of friction. Periodically remove the top turntable rotating disk and remove any foreign debris. (EX: track ballast).
Adding lubrication will reduce friction:
"Using gear grease will make it more difficult to find and clean any foreign debris inside the Geneva movement".
Atlas motor #2790 only operates (N) scale Atlas turntables.
Atlas motor #304 operates (HO) scale and (O) scale Atlas turntables.


There are many different ways to control the speed of motors but one very simple and easy way is to use a pulse width modulation (PWM) motor controller. Using a pulse width modulation (PWM) motor controller will have the 12.V-DC Atlas turntable motor operate more smoothly. The rotation speed of the turntable will be controlled by a variable resistor (pot) to allow for slower smoother rotations.


Use a better high quality pulse width modulation (PWM) motor controller.
(PWM) like a DC 6-30V 16kHz PWM Digital 3 Bit LED Motor Speed Controller.
Sold on Ebay for around US ($3.00).
Be sure to note that this project is using a (12.V-DC) power supply at (1.Amp).

Option : (#3) (Advanced)
Adding a Pulse Width Modulation Motor (PWM) Controller.
* Requires a (3.P.D.T.) center off toggle switch
* The (2.P.D.T.)  switch contacts controls the turntable rotation directions.
* The (1.P.D.T.)  switch contacts controls the sound module power input.

The  (2.P.D.T.)  center off toggle switch contacts controls the turntable (CW) & (CCW)
rotation directions. The pulse width modulation motor (PWM) controller controls the rotation speed
of the turntable.
The (1.P.D.T.)  center off toggle switch contacts insure that the sound module
receives a constant (12.V-DC) power supply.
